daryllh:
the whole installing posts thing was a pain in the butt to think about. It's not about just digging a hole and filling with concrete.

It isn't?  I've been doing it wrong the times I did it then.  Of course, I didn't pay a professional...  I just put up the f*ckin' fence.  In my case I just used a post hole digger and did what you described.  Put in the posts, concrete, attached the sections to the posts.  It was a fair amount of work so I can understand why someone would hire it done, but it's also very do-able if you are a handy person or into that sort of thing (re: cheap like me).  Perhaps you have other considerations that make this job more complicated though, so maybe there's something I'm missing.

In this economy I'd consider lowballing a handyman on the job.  There are lots of dudes that would love the work and surely could handle putting up a fence...  and they need the work so you might be able to get a good deal on it.  Just a thought I wanted to throw out there.  Good luck with your project!

You can see in the pics I posted that there is a big silver maple.  Those roots are huge.  Also, there was some concrete that needed to be drilled through along with some asphalt.

It was around 200 feet of fence with 3 gates.  I don't have the patience or the handy man capacity to complete a job like that.  We had saved some money for this project since we moved to the house 2 years ago.  We could have saved a lot of dough doing it ourselves but I'm certain the end result wouldn't have been as nice.

Looks great Daryll.  I also dig your garage/patio with overhang.  That's kinda cool.

what's telling about our situation is that we didn't lowball anybody but the cheap quote guy was the turd who couldn't get the job done.  Me and the gf both agreed (partly from what Same Old was suggesting) that we wouldn't get involved with any price wars with the 5 companies that we looked at.  We listened to their quote and that was it.

The first dude's vinyl price was lower than everybody else's cedar price.  We should have seen that as a big red flag.

yeah. it's got old couple written all over it.  We like it.  Now I just need 2 taps coming from a fridge in the garage.  1 for beer and 1 for vodka...in arms reach of a chair. lol

I've got a similar thing on my garage as well, but mine is half screen porch and half patio.  So I've got my grilling area and an outdoor dining room.

Dude!  It'd be Svedka all day, every day.  Guy I know would help me do it if I get an extra fridge.

that's awesome.  I wanted a screened in area but the lady didn't think it was a good idea.  The area over there is too small for 6 people as it is.

I was actually saying that to Coop - I know he's Ketel One gay. I also know your affinity for the Sved. Sorry, I should have used quotes to better clarify.

Regardless, I want a vodka tap!

I've got a 2 1/2 car garage, so there's a fair amount of space.  My biggest beef about my back yard is that the neighbors on either side of me have fences.  One side is vinyl and the other is wood.  It bugs the piss out of me.

I haven't had Ketel in awhile.  Svedka is my vodka mainstay.

I did this too and the fence turned out surprisingly well considering I'm not the handiest dude ever.  Now, whether it will still look nice in five years...I have no idea.  It was a massive fence and I did it singlehandedly.  I also moved from that house a few years ago so it doesn't really matter to me at this point.  I will say, though, that I'll never, EVER do something like that again.

It was unbelievably labor intensive.

Having said all that, Darryl, the fence looks fantastic.  That's a sweet ass back yard you're rocking.

Economic downturn, Vieners.  The wife's income has been clipped a fair amount, otherwise I'd probably buy Ketel more frequently.

...update as well....

No pics, but the kids at Dakota Fence installed chainlink love around the backyard at the Palatial Compound. They had the second highest bid. Top notch work!

Couldn't be happier  :)

I'm glad I received a couple of quotes to learn more about the process so I could get I want. I paid more than the original quote to get the upgrades I preferred. They had to "custom angle" the walk through gate and double drive gate to match the plane of the yard and it looks seamless...  :)

Plus, I have much happier dogs....

2 guys, that's it.  Start early, finish early.  Answered all our questions.

he makes Adirondack chairs and matching ottomans out of the same cedar.  Don't know price of ottomans but the chairs he's selling for $50 a piece.  That's half price compared to some sellers.  He also does cedar planter boxes.
