I don't know if this is just a Toyota thing, but what is the freakin' deal with rear defrost in cars?  It's always turning off after 5-7 minutes no matter what.  There could still be all kinds of ice and snow and frost all over the back window, and that fucker will turn off.  It then slips my mind and it's like I never really achieve a clear back window.  Why does it turn off?  What's the reasoning?  I'm allowed to have the defrost on on my windshield as much as I like, but not on the back window?

Haha. My last car did that. I always had to check to make sure the light was on. Now in my new car I'm pretty sure it stays on, but does a horrible job at defrosting.

Mine shuts itself off too.  I'm not into it.

My Pontiac does the same thing. I'm sure it's just a standard timing thing.

It turns off at a certain time, because it draws a ton of power, and if it was on for a lond period of time, it could burn itself out, or damage the alternator.  I really dont know why they havent improved that design.

Pilla's Debut album, Don't Touch me, also on Itunes!

I think the ones that turn off have a hotter coil that acts faster than the ones that stay on as long as you want.   But  the timed defrosts heats at such a rate that if it stayed on long enough it might burn itself out.   And they put the auto shut off in as a precautionary.  Kind of like putting that annoying dinging sound in some cars so it reminds you ever 3 minutes to buckle up.   Just another way of car manufacturers to tell you whats best for you.

I would venture to guess that your front defrost happens because the vent blowing on it. That obviously won't stop unless you turn off the fan.

Rear defrost is timed, so that way you don't burn out the element as quickly. You'll still have to manually remove ice and snow, the window "heater" just helps loosen up the frozeness.............

The 4Runner that Wifealiscious abuses turns off after about 5 minutes.

You know, I've got an '01 4Runner, and love the thing to death, but am about to purposely disable that stupid Automatic Traction control, ''cuz there ain't nothing worse than sitting on a patch of ice waiting for a chance to get out onto a 2 lane highway, and hitting the gas, going just far enough to die, then nothing, because as soon as a tire spins it cuts all power to all tires. Weak. And to think that en emissions problem actually did that for me, and I spent some good money and time fixing it... FWIW I can't recall my rear defrost cutting off unless I push the button, I'll pay more attention to it tonight when I go to work.

<----Got the '04. Just put it on full time all-wheel drive. Better fuel economy, and haven't had the TC monster attack us yet. At least the 4R has a rear window squirter and wiper............

I guess I don't understand why they don't just make it fans like the ones you have in the front.  It's dumb.  We can fly a guy to the damned moon but someone hasn't handled rear defrost yet?

I was under the impression 4wd can be bad for the vehicle on dry pavement, you know something I don't? And yeah gotta love that rear wiper!

Think of the duct work... where would it go?  Also, by the time the forced air got from the heater coil (engine compartment) all the way to the back seat, it would have cooled off enough to frost up the inside of your window.

My suggestion... scrape your rear window like the rest of us ya' lazy bastage. Stick out tongue

Yes, running 4WD High on dry pavement is no bueno, but there is a ALLWD option on her model. As well as 4WD H & L. I don't know if it is available on your series......

Well, there are a bunch of larger vehicles with air vents in the back seats at about the epicenter of the vehicle.  I'd hardly think that the warm air couldn't make it an extra foot or two, but I digress.

You could get one of those heater fans that you plug into the lighter....if the cord's long enough.
