    Unlocked? Best stompbox compressor?

    WTF?

Why the hell was this post locked?

Perhaps a glitch, but here it is again, and I am really curious what all y'all have to say about this topic:

    ==============

Okay my vote goes to these two:

--Analog Man BiComprossor-- A boutique clone of a Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer feeding a Ross Compressor (the purple one made famous by Trey Anastasio from Phish.  This is the shit!!!  You can choose either or both in series, which is a killer tone to my personal ears.  Great build quality, good value, and sturdy as hell.  Boffo!!

--Demeter Compulator-- a fantastic single stage emulation of the 1176.  Not too drastic, but very versatile and forgiving.  Especially effective on acoustic pickups!!  Also great on Rickenbackers!  Good LED. Quiet and extremely well built.  Only bummer is the mini-plug power adapter connector.  WHY?

    I have the following:

MXR DynaComp--two originals that sounded completely different, and one reissue that stunk in comparison

Rockman Compressor/Line Driver-- half-rack unit that is perfect for the classic Def Leppard clean tone. AC power is a plus.  Good EQ options.  Interfaces with distortions very well.  Lots of connection options.  And damn quiet.

Ross Compressor-- holding on to this Purple baby for vintage value.  But I must admit the AnalogMan clone does the same thing, only better.

Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer-- I have three units of this, and they all are of different vintage, and sound much different.  You want "Sultans of Swing?"  Plug a Strat set on the treble/middle notch pickup position (second from treble on a fiveway switch) thru this into a Fender Deluxe amp and crank it up to about 8.

Toadworks Mr. Squeazy-- very versatile, and also very quiet.  A good choice for all around use, but somehow it was not magic for me.

DOD vintage late 70's compressor-- a non-magical DynaComp that actually seemed to work very well on bass.  Go figure.

    So what are your opinions?

Isn't the Ross compressor grey? I bought one a few years back for $65 and sold it on Ebay to someone in Japan for $350. Helped contibute to our pedal collection. It did sound good though.

We have a good collection here at the studio. A script logo MXR Dynacomp is our go to when we need that sound. It is great for keeping notes even during ringing out picked parts.

All the ones you mentioned I would like to have for different flavors.

Yeah, the Ross is actually grey in color, but the one I had, had freakishly shifted in color to a slight purple tinge...Wonder if that was a quirk of manufacture or what?

As far as a studio goes, you should definitely get the Demeter Compulator (damn it sounds killer on piezo acoustics, and bright tele's) and the Analogman BiComprossor, which is the shiznit when it comes to ultimate squash--- that bad boy is a major part of my tone now!

Just my recommendation to a studio guy...

Compressor is just one of those pedals I never really understood. It just doesn't do much for me or the sound in my head. I've got a Route 66 pedal that's got a Tubescreamer half and a Dyna-comp/Ross hybrid on the half.  Never really found much use for the compressor as far as what I do.

That said, I do have a friend that's got one of those Robert Keeley Compressors that he let me play around with for a bit. That seemed to have a number of very sweet things it does. Not exactly enough to make me wanna throw a couple hundred bucks after one, but it definitely intrigued me. A/B'd with the Route 66 there was a very distinct but subtle difference in tone that was very pleasing to the ear. I definitely considered getting one after that.

(my favorite pedal still is the Crowther Audio Hotcake. Can't imagine playing without it.)

If any bassists happen to check this out, I recommend the EBS multicomp.

Isn't the Toadworks called the Mr. Squishy?

Anyway, after trying both the Mr. Squishy and the MXR Dynacomp (both original and modded), I'll take the Dynacomp.  It sounds a little bit warmer, and has a bit more grit that I really dig.
