They obviously can't deny it's something desireable, and, that better cities do (not to mention the STUPID, mandatory closed liquor stores on Sunday ).

As much as I'm not up in arms in reference to establishments being able to serve as late as they want etc...I do hate when the government contradicts themselves when it's self serving.  Crap it's the republicans, let's legalize homosexual prostitutes while we are at it.

As a drunk and a boozehound, I agree whole heartedly.  Scotch, scotch, scotch.  Scotchy scotch scotch.  Liquor stores should stay open 24/7.  Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get booze at 5 am?

This is the stupidest damned thing I've ever heard.  With all the money involved with conventioneering, don't you figger that the folks who picked to have the RNC here know that you can't drink past two, smoke anywhere or buy booze on Sundays?  Maybe they like that we still have antiquated blue laws.

 My guess is there aren't many bars that would stay open beyond 2AM, if allowed to do so.... even on a weekend night.

 The good Minnesotans need their sleepytime, so they can milk cows... mow the lawn... you know the drill.

Fuck that.  If people are willing to drink later, bars will stay open later.  Look at Chicago. 

This reminds me of the time thta Saint Patrick's Day landed on a Friday, and the Pope waived the whole "no meat on Fridays" thing, just so the good Catholics could have their corned beef.

I thought they weren't supposed to eat meat on Friday because it's a SIN!  Now the Pope thinks he can overturn it to make PR points with the Irish (who don't eat corned beef, btw).

If it's not a big deal to lift a ban on selling alcohol, why have the ban in the first place??

The original plan was to allow all bars in Minnesota to stay open until 4am.  But MADD pushed & fought hards right when this became public, and asked the question "If the RNC is being held in St Paul, why would the state want to allow bars in Hibbing or International Falls to stay open until 4am?" 

They stated it would send the wrong message, drunk driving arrests & deaths could increase drastically during this time period, and overall, not a good idea.  That is when it was changed to restricting it to within 10 miles.  Makes sence to me. 

This was approved yesterday...  Unbelieveable.

It's left up to individual cities and townships in the seven-county metro area to decide whether they want to expand bar hours to 4 a.m. They're also allowed to charge bars a fee of as much as $2,500 for special permits to operate during the longer hours.

Sen. Linda Scheid, DFL-Brooklyn Park, who co-authored the closing-time proposal in a broader liquor policy bill in the Senate, said she believed an informational session for legislators quelled concerns about enforcing the expanded hours and the ability of local jurisdictions to regulate it.

Under the measure, the later hours would be in effect only from Aug. 31, the day before the convention begins in St. Paul, through Sept. 5, the day after it ends.
