Anyone else get the feeling those light panels were there to represent Townsend's restraining order? You know, to make sure no kids got within 50 feet? Seems too coincidental not to be true.

You know. I did think it was kind of odd that the crowd was kept out of the reach of the band. That's as good a theory as any!

GG:
I've heard several on this very board say that Pete > Jimmy Page.

Anybody who says this is a dumbass.  Page was better, is better, and always will be better.  That goes for Eddie Van Halen and Kirk Hammett too.

Chica!:
No risk of a Nipplegate with The Who.

It's not so much that there is no risk of a Nipplegate with The Who, it's just that people would never think to look for nipples at the waist.

I'm pretty sure they had some kind of backing track going.

Did ya hear those perfect falsetto b/g vox during Who Are You? That had to be a backing track, unless they had b/u singers out of view.

The first thing I noticed was Townsend's vox were awful. No falsetto or upper register, which was a signature he used to rely on heavily.

Also, Daltrey was really straining to hit the high notes, but was a bit better at it than Pete.

When they sang together, it was a mess. I know, they're 65 years old, but still.

If you don't have good vox, you're doomed.

I think that was what made the show below average.

Those are young man songs that aren't meant for senior citizens.

I find it funny that they played "My Generation" considering that everyone watching from their generation fell asleep on their lazyboy within the first quarter.

I also don't blame them for playing like crap. Townsend's hands were obviously swollen from rubbing his wang to online kiddie porn! Great guitar tone though. To bad we had to hear him play through it.

Great stage and lights but I am bumbed it was wasted on the poo.

You'd think Pino and Zak could at the very least take a page out of Thayer and Singer's playbook.  C'mon guys put forth some effort.

I heard on the radio this morning that Daltrey was disappointed the crowd wasn't more lively. Sleep Stupid Briton; you're playing for the TV audience, not the people at the stadium who are trying to get a hotdog, a beer, and a piss in before the game starts again. Talk about missing the forest for the trees. 60k at the stadium vs a hundred million or two on TV. Hmmmmmmm....

I didn't think the performance was that friggin horrible. I didn't like it all that much, but it wasn't a disaster. I'd rather have this half-band play than Joe or Jane American Idol Winner.

That stage was freakin badass though.

without getting into pissin' matches about the band itself, I will say that I wasn't too thrilled with the SB show.

First thought was that they weren't The Who (something I have always believed since John died).

Second thought was that they are too old. 7 years ago it would have worked.

Third thought was that it was totally lame to take 5+minute songs and make a medley out of them. That thing was as disjointed as could be.

The lighting was awesome but you know the band was not sharp when people see The Who and like the light show more than the stage performance.

Wow you guys are a tough crowd. I have mixed feelings on the peformance. As Daryll mentioned there are only 2 members left and I feel they are a band like The Beatles where all members were very important to the whole. Even though I do think Zac Starkey is very good.

Should they be playing as The Who and at their age? That is their choice.

I don't feel the performance was as bad as most others here. Roger's voce has gotten raspy over the years. That happens to some singers. Anyone heard Dylan lately? Roger still had decent pitch and seemed into it.

Pete's voice has never been that technically great but I do like the parts he sings on songs. Songs like Eminence Front and solo songs like Let My Love Open the Door etc. I think have great lead vocals by Pete.

Pete seemed on with his guitar playing for the show. Now Pete'e guitar playing as a whole, I think you guys are totally missing the boat. He has always been more about the energy and not an exacting kind of player live. Not very notey solos etc. Very chord and rhythm oriented. He has many memorable guitar parts. They are more rythmic though.

He is definitely an rock icon for guitar playing and song writing. He had to be one of the first players to really use feedback alot and I think was the first to break guitars on stage. Not that that has anything to do playing ability. He also was a great at getting early synth sounds and utilizing them into songs. Created rock opera's also. Not sure anyone did that before them?

The Who's album and song catalog is original sounding and renowned. Songs like I Can See for Miles, Bargain, Who Are You, Won't Get Fooled Again, Behind Blue Eyes, Baba O'Riley, Pinball Wizard,  etc. They have many more not as radio played songs that are great. Songs like The Song is Over, Whiskey Man, etc.

In my opinion they do not have as consistent of an album output as say The Beatles or Pink Floyd but I do suggest getting an abum like, Who's Next would be a good starter, and really digging into it. Watch Tommy also. They are a very important rock music band.

Peace Todd

I'm with ToddF... and I'll go stand on Lorenzo's coffee table and piss in his beer - a la the cover of WHO'S NEXT - if the following ARE NOT some of the finest rock performances put to tape.... EVER!

Didn't see the Super Bowl... and to Neil's point.... it doesn't really matter.

(Don't worry Lorenzo..... as the Who would say in part VI of A Quick One..... You are forgiven...) Wink

Mikko,

you probably picked the worst professional recording, live performance of '...fooled' on record. Moon was a shell of himself (last performance before he died) and the band was sick of doing that song over and over again for the film.

I just want to be clear:   I like The Who.  They have their place amongst the great rock acts of all time.

I thought that particular performance was lacking vocally.

Carrie Underwear was struggling too, so it may have been the monitors, who knows.

What I do know is that I was looking forward to it, and it was disappointing.

OK.   I missed the Super Bowl this year due to travel.

I just got back to town tonight and had a chance to watch.   Holy hell that was awful.
