File names

    File names

Maybe I'm just too picky but I get really annoyed with the complete inability of people at my work to STOP using spaces and periods in their file names.   I just love it when someone emails me a file and I have no idea how I'm supposed to open it because they've named it something like this:

    "Honors concert, 04.14.2008"

    Yeah, that's a file name.

I know that the whole "don't use spaces in a filename" isn't really that big of a deal anymore, but periods?  I guess it only makes a difference on a pc.

I won't even get into the annoyance of having files emailed to me.  We have a shared server but it's just way to complicated for people to actually use.

More on the computer annoyances...we had a computer that was used by a position that had about 5 people in 14 months working in it.  The position always did the same types of stuff and the original computer owner was super organized and the computer reflected that.  Each subsequent person felt the need to create their own folder with their own work, so every person who worked on a tax hearing has the info in "their name:whatever goofy thing they called it:tax hearing" instead of just saving the stuff in the  "Tax Hearings" folder that already existed.

I guess I shouldn't expect too much; I work somewhere that the idea of upgrading software is completely lost on people.  Need a new version of a software program?  You get a whole new computer!

It matters even on a Mac because Macs run a version of Linux on them.

Well, you can setup rules to stop your email server (and client) to not allow any emails with files of x# of kiobytes in size. In fact, for real fun, you can have an auto reply with directions on how to use the shared resources on the network.

More on the computer annoyances...we had a computer that was used by a position that had about 5 people in 14 months working in it. That's why those of us in the IT field use profiles and other sysadmin tools to stop the EUs (End Users) from fucking shit up by installing applications or being cutesy with some other b.s. like what you said. Lock that shit down.

Well, considering the fact that often times new software packages, such as Adobe Creative Suite CS, or Micrisoft Office 2007, or any other number of applications out there, won't run (or run well) on older PCs. Now often times you don't need to upgrade the PC just run a software program, and as a matter of fact, in most cases you don't need to do that; however there are those exceptions like I mentioned above. Other suchsoftware "upgrade" (I use that term loosely and consider this a DOWNGRADE really) is moving from XP to Vista. You'll almost certainly need a new PC for that peiece of bloatware b.s.
