justanotherdrummer:

Donny Ride:

you get what you pay for.

well you maybe be right and I may be a talentless douche, but the one thing I atleast pride myself on around here is that fact that Metallica is not one of my main influences.

Now that I think of it I'm surpised that 93X doesn't bring back to Metallica mondays (maybe they do I don't know) thing, since everyone seems to have a Metallica boner.

So if anyone gives you guff they automatically have a "Metallica boner"?  I kind of think you're being a dick, but it doesn't make me want to listen to Metallica.

I'm not saying this to be contrary, but I feel justanotherdrummer's pain. It's aggravating to me to know that if I wanted to play covers, I could find a new band tomorrow. I'm going to put the blame on myself - I honestly haven't made the effort I need to make to find a rewarding new project. While I wish it were different, I know that relying on this board to do that is not a particularly viable course of action (on the other hand, it is how I hooked up with Captain Lance and the crew). Dude was just trying to vent a bit, not get his face ripped off.

its people like you who make posting on forums annoying. You take everything I say into great detailed context. Mike Patton is not one of my main influences thank you very much. He is just an example of a musician who I think has a different way of thinking of things with music. It doesn't mean I idolize him. I don't know where people like you come up with this crap. Entertainment purposes probably.

JAD, help me understand something.  Why can't people challenge what you say without you taking it personally?  The guys who get all bent out of shape because someone disagrees with them are the ones who get gang screwed.  That's not just here.  That's pretty much true everywhere you go.  Seems like a few noobs have been struggling with this concept lately.  I don't know if that's a youth thing or what...

Folkerts even tried to explain that to you when you lost it here:

Oh...and Scobbs...the "gang screwed" reference was purely figurative.  Don't start acting mad all the time.  Its not going to work.

Yeah, I haven't been here as long as many on this board and GG FOR ONCE, is right.  Now if he could only be a little logical on the Political Forum I'd be happy.

Anyhow, my rip on you for being influenced by Mike Patton wasn't to rip on you, but a defense to those that are influenced my Metallica.  I don't listen to either but you are one in the same.  Though you think you're trying to be experimental, you're really not.  You're trying to fit into a certain box, not he same box as people that are over influenced by Metallica but one's that are over influenced by Mike Patton.  Trying to be different is still trying to be...instead just be.

Which brings me to a side note, Number #53 that I might not be having a good time at the Rock in Maplewood.  You see me with in listening distance of a "Mike Patton is God" conversation  only to be trumped by a "Maynard is a God" conversation

The insults weren't so much slams on you as they were entertainment for others at the expense of your posts HOWEVER, there is a lot of good advice in thie thread.  Do what you do and eventually people will fill rolls in the band.  Kind of a build it, and he will come, Field of Dreams, mentality.

I would like to say that Metallica IS the reason I play guitar. I may not listen to them much anymore (well, sometimes I guess I still do bust out their older stuff) but that is only a tiny sliver of the scope of music that I listen to. James Hetfield as a rhythm guitarist is phenomenal. Period. He is like a machine... That doesn't mean I want to do anything that even remotely sounds like Metallica, but I think it has done me a lot of good as a player personally.  A lot of guitarists would do themselves a lot of good to pay attention to what James Hetfield and Scott Ian do best: play ridiculously tight, percussive rhythm guitar. I see so many really good guitarists that can just wail on a good lead, but their rhythm playing is a sloppy, mushy, all-over-the-place mess.

The last way you want to go about finding musicians is to freak out on all the musician on a board like this. And to be honest, this site is just a small part of the local music community. Where else have you looked? Have you put ads up in music stores? Have you put ads up in CityPages? Craigslist? Have you checked around McNally Smity or IPR?

You also have to realize you are just asking to get flamed when you come on with a post like that. You vented. Fine. But you pretty much came on here and told the people this town sucks. There are plenty of musicians, but they aren't going to fall on your lap. You have to go around and find people. THAT is one of the biggest issues with alot of this music scene.. People just kind of expect shit to happen. It takes tons of work. You can't just put an ad up listing what you want to do, and expect people to just flock to you. This town is full of bands that consider themselves 'progressive' and 'experimental', but most of them write trivial, derivitive, boring songs that aren't even good enough to be considered mainstream rock. They just plain SUCK. If I see one more band on myspace in this town that says they are 'progressive' and listen to their really crappy songs, I'm personally going to start vomiting each and every time.

It's tough finding musicians that you click with creatively and personally. But, coming on a board and freaking out is NOT the way to do it. For one, working with a over emotional head case is NOT fun... And you're already leaving that taste in peoples mouths. Chill out. Do the legwork. Get some ideas down on disc. Show people something. You can claim all you want how creative and experimental you are... Put something out that shows how creative and experimental you are.. But you've gone about this the entirely wrong way.

I will always remember the Musicscene Mini-Golf Tournament from a couple years ago.

First hole, someone starts blasting 'Invisible Kid' from Metallica's St. Anger on their boombox.

Almost in unison, everyone was using their putter as an air guitar.

There was no golf that day.

Um, yea.  Did you notice how tuffline burned me?  I didn't call him a fucking asshole, and start ripping back.  It's just a little ribbin' my friend.  Finding the right players is tough.  Your responses were what made you look like a douche.  That, and the fact you jump to conclusions and misquote whenever anyone responds.  I didn't call you talentless.  I gave you the benefit of the doubt, and said you HAD talent, but were a douche.  Go back and read. If you begin to read correctly, comprehend and respond accordingly people won' give you so much shit.  In fact, go back and read the entire thread and objetively look at how you jumped on people.  Your attitude is the internet equivelant of a guy "looking at you the wrong way" and you coming up and shoving him.

Indeed. For the record I find Topher to be incredibly non-douchey.

Just having a wee laugh.

I find this thread to be quite amusing and thought I would contribute to further move it down it's non-sensical path.

Exactly!  It's like when I take my Great Dane to the dog park.  Dogs play rough but the intention isn't to kill or hurt the other dog though it gets rough at times.  It's all about how much you can take before you actually start to bare you teeth.  Now that you know we're not going to hurt you, you'll be less sensitive right?

That was my worst post this week.  Caffeine over load.

You see Drummerperson, you might actually start to miss the insults.

If that's the case, you can set someone up with a no brainer, as I have demostrated with the help of my trusty assistant GG.

Look you people are right and I seriously mean it. You have to understand that I'm not taking this personally. I may come off as an asshole whos angry. The fact is, if ya really knew me, I'm a pretty laid back nice guy. My whole point I was only trying to make was that when I look up potential bandmates on lets say Bandmix.com I find that a lot of poeple put Metallica or U2 as their main influences. I don't hate Metallica, infact I give them a lot of props for what they've done for music overall. It was merely just an negative observation in a sense.

I may have snapped at people, not on a personal level per say, but it just drives me nuts when the things i write get blown out of porportion or my words get twisted around. I know picking on people like me in forums is amusing, and I'm a pretty open-minded guy towards other viewpoints and rants. I just find it kind of annoying when things do get taken too outta context.
