Good point Theory.  At least the music of the 80's, in a lot of cases, took some stylistic risks and broke new ground.  It is harder to find that sort of thing now.

Hey Theory guy your absolutely right. I may have gone on a bitching rant when I started this forum. I know I went off and didn't really get to say what I meant say. My point was not that the music of the 1980's sucked or even the clothing trends where were the worst. Although I think the 80's look is kinda raunchy.

My whole point to make, was that I found it sad that the kids of this generation can't come up with their own music sound, or their own fashion trends. All they are doing is ripping off trends and sounds from that past becuase they never lived through those times, and between technology and the way this country is now, kids don't seem to think outside the box for themselves anymore. Atleast every generation in the 20th century had their own flavor to bring to the decade. For the last ten years I haven't seen anything new from this new generation of kids and teens. Hell I'm not even that old, but atleast I'm a product of the ninties. Now whether you cared for the ninties or not is up to you to decide. Atleast the ninties had is own thing going. Just like the last 90 years before it.

Yeah I noticed the other day when I went clothes shopping that every store I went into had 80's clothes.  And not just a few rails of it, but pretty much everything in there.  So I just didn't buy any clothes, and will continue not to buy any until people wise the fuck up.  Seriously, I lived through the 80's and actually hated the clothes then, so have no intention in reliving it.  Women's tops particularly are the most shapeless, unflattering pieces of materlal I've ever seen, and every color is made to purposely clash with red hair.  I guess I just have to accept that I'm almost 36 and start buying from old women stores where all their clothes are sensible.  Or clothes stores here could have a bit of originality and not be behind the rest of the world by a number of years when it comes to fashion (80's revivial ended and wasn't very popular 4 years ago in most of Western Europe).

Wow, it was nice to get that off my chest.

If I see oversized FLORESCENT sweatshirts (other than orange or pink), I'm totally getting one.

I'll wear it, too! Stick out tongue

I went to high school in the mid 80s, and I hated the clothing styles then. I hate them even more now. Why anyone would want to revive a style of any previous decade, let alone that one, is beyond me. It's all marketing though, isn't it? Run as far as you can with a theme, and then change it so that everyone has to rush out and buy new clothes. At least they could be somewhat original.

When I saw all that 80s shit in a store in uptown last weekend, I wanted to leave immediately, and not support or validate the concept by even being there. A futile gesture, perhaps, because I'm sure every store will have that crap in it soon. Ugh.

I actually like some 80s music, though, and you can't deny that it was a huge departure from what had come before. I still love Ultravox, Roxy Music, The Cure, and of course all the early 80s VH and AC/DC. Fuck, remember Blizzard of Ozz? I played that cassette until all I got from my system was unintelligible warbling. Seeing Rhodes in person, seeing Van Halen in '81, Rush right around the same time, and a host of others...

Yeah, some cool shit happened back then, but you can leave the clothing out of it. That stuff should never come back, and the only people who would embrace it are people without a shred of originality who follow the herd.

I think the clothes are actually aimed at teenagers, and they can get away with it, but once you get on a bit you're going to look silly wearing most of that stuff (unless you're really young looking).  Unfortunately though it means that clothes stores that usually have decent clothes (even for the 30-somethings), are all trying to sell the 80's stuff, despite it not working on anyone over the age of 20, or anyone who wants to dress like a grown up.

Maybe I'll pick myself up some jelly shoes after work tonight.....MAN, I loved those things (when I was 8).

Nothing beats 80s thrash, in my book (part of the reason my pants are wet for the Testament show(s) coming up)!

Now see...this is where I have to disagree.  I thought the nineties were...fine.  But I haven't seen artists at Michael Jackson or Prince's caliber since the 80's.  It was like they were the last of the absolute greats.  I keep waiting for the next wave and it never seems to happen.  Sadly, I wonder if it ever will.

Except for early-90's hip hop, I can't really think of anyone in the nineties who made original, interesting music.

But that's just The Manvalanche.

To me, the ONLY downfall to the 80's revival is that also implies that in about 3 or 4 years a new "Nirvana" will arise, early 90's trends will come back and kids will be able to buy cheap guitars with single coil pickups, plug them into thier DOD distortion pedals, run that into thier "Kick ass" Crate amps....jam for about a month and then be "skilled" enough to go start a band and become "Anti-Rockstars"..........looks like Those of us who actually spent time learning how to play our instruments will once again be mocked.

Oh well, I lived through it once when I was in my very early teens, guess I can deal with it again.

Oh wait.....one more downfall to the 80's revival.....for those of us who kept it alive throughout the grunge and Nu Metal periods (I'm talking mainly through music.....writing actual "riffs", using tons of harmonies, throwing actual "hooks" into the music, having....gasp....solo's and lead guitar work) well....our secret is out and we're suddenly not so special!! now EVERYONE will know where we ripped it off from!! lol

Oh well, I was rockin Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, Maiden, Priest, Def Lep, G n R, Skid Row, the Crue, etc. when it wasn't "cool" any more.....i'll do the same when it's back to not being "cool" again.

Now if you'll exuse me, I need to re-shave the steps in my hair, comb my ducktail, lace up my high tops and go do an oil change on my Z28!!!.....wait, it's sunny outside...better rock my kick ass Back to the Future 2 Sunglasses that I got from Pizza Hut!!! (tell me someone remembers those!!!)
