    No way dude.

    Critics are the gatekeepers.

    They know all.

    They have vast musical knowledge.

Jesus, you know nothing about "The Industry".

    Yea? We'll I think you're a narcotics agent!

What's the score here?  What's next?

i don't really have an opinion on drift effect's music. it's not really my thing.

but man i just listened to the stuff on myspace and i have to say the way mainstream rock records are recorded and produced and mastered nowadays really bums me out. just this oppressive sheen and flat sounding wall of compression on everything.

i've been listening to a shit load of old aerosmith records lately and it's amazing how much better hard rock records sounded back then, music aside, just from a strictly production standpoint.

not that any of these songs are up there with "Sweet Emotion" or "Back in the Saddle"

    yep.

ya know, there are a few gems of the past two decades, but for the most part, you're 110% right.  I just listened to a few Gil Norton-produced records, and thought...why can't more bands sound like this?  I mean real bands.  That give a shit about how they sound or what they're playing.  Which is pretty hard to find now anyway.  Oh well.

Keep in mind that is a compressed Myspace MP3. But I do agree with you to a point. Producers used to me much more detailed and particular than they are now. The use of computers in production has likley contributed to this downfall. I am not a producer but I would think that may have something to do with it.

Ah, player, an MP3 IS a compressed file.

It uses a lossy compression algorithm that is designed to greatly reduce the amount of data required to represent the audio recording, yet still sound like a faithful reproduction of the original uncompressed audio to most listeners.

     Just a sidenoteCool

Although, I have more experience recording without, computers have opened up a lot of doors for production, so I don't think technology's to blame.  It's just the fact that anyone with a PC and the want to put out music that doesn't really need any great attention to detail or just has a real lack of art to it can call themselves a producer.

     Computers and recording, good example:

    Jeff Halland

     Not-so-good:

    Adam Dutkiewicz

A lot of the problem is the fact that when mastering, a lot of bands just squash the shit out of it.  They take away any dynamics that were there to begin with....ever notice how some of the best produced albums are a little quieter than other albums??

yeah, that's an aspect and definately an ugly trend.  I don't think it's any larger than the actual studio work itself, prior to mastering.

To clear this up and I think this is what Lanik is getting at: Mp3 is a data compressed format, which throws away some of the data that makes up the audio stream. Compression at mastering actually compresses the sound signal. In this case it's an apples v/ oranges comparison.

    What he said.

    To clear this ALL up...

    1) Sound production is commonly crap

    2) MP3's are compressed data, Audio compression is directly related to sound in the matering process

What's really sad is that the majority of people nowadays cant hear the difference between a song on an mp3 and a song on a CD. Which is sad. But the trend is also killing it. Compressing the shit out of it to get it as loud as possible to compete with all the other assholes compressing the fuck outta things.
