Swan Lake Name New Album After Goofy Sci-Fi Flick

The 1985 film Enemy Mine tells an unlikely tale of inter-species bro-mance between two adversaries: a human (Dennis Quaid) and an alien (Louis Gossett Jr.). It didn't win any Oscars. But a childhood viewing of the movie did leave a strong impression with Swan Lake's Dan Bejar (Destroyer, New Pornographers), who-- along with bandmates Spencer Krug (Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown) and Carey Mercer (Frog Eyes)-- was inspired to name the indie super group's second album (out March 24) in honor of the flick. (Keeping with the mid-80s sci-fi spirit, here are some possible future Swan Lake album titles: Critters, Last Starfighter, Flight of the Navigator.) From what we can tell, though, Enemy Mine (the album) is not a concept LP about Gossett Jr.'s remarkable Enemy Mine makeup. Alas.

According to a press release, the follow-up to 2006's Beast Moans will be more "stripped-down" and "deliberate," and it will feature "nice songs." Sorry cynics, no mean songs here. And it's breaking new ground in the realm of album art with its sketchy sleeve-- apparently, the "first known use" of a court painting as LP cover. Judge Judy, your move.
