If there's anything Crystal Stilts like more than moody vocals and jangly guitars, it's alliteration. "Crippled Croon" opened the Brooklyn band's self-titled debut full-length, on which their first single, "Shattered Shine" (produced by Sean Maffucci, who recorded Gang Gang Dance's God's Money), also appeared. The track's rough, echoey lo-fi pop scrawled its way across four-and-a-half minutes on that release, surrounded on each side by pillows of guitar noise. For the group's Slumberland debut LP, Alight of Night, the track is louder and more focused, but still full of sibilant tongue-twisters about shape-shifting amid other mostly indecipherable lyrics. An off-kilter harmonica rises out above the tambourine and distorted guitars.
