Madonna's penchant for style-poaching is so pronounced it's almost become cliché. An uncharacteristically behind-the-curve hookup with Pharrell and Timbaland earlier this year on Hard Candy probably didn't help. Her hits are undeniable, though, as are her tastes-- not talking about A-Rod, sports fans-- and the tremendous shadow this erstwhile Material Girl still casts on the pop sphere is evident in not just her Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction (yawn), but also the ongoing proliferation of covers, like Malcolm Middleton's "Stay" or last year's charity tribute album, Through the Wilderness.
Sometimes, believe it or not, there are moments when I feel like I'm not in the groove. What did I learn from Jeremy Jay's Through the Wilderness "Into the Groove" cover? The groove is in the heart. Barcelona producer Sidechains bears this lesson in mind as he updates this song, originally from Madonna's major feature film debut, Desperately Seeking Susan. He gives his remix the blaring sirens, chopped-up vocals, and full-on energy of post-Justice, post-Cut Copy electro-house, but doesn't lose the song's essential wistful, escapist quality. "Live out your fantasy here with me," Madonna sings. A disco singer as much as anything, she might appreciate that Sidechains has included her in his own dancefloor fantasy. Who knows, she could even get hung up on him. (via Resonator)
