Lakes are awesome! Guns Babes Lemonade, the 2007 debut album by Australia's Muscles, is full of that sort of big, excited, super-obvious exclamation. See "Sweaty". See "Ice Cream". However, don't necessarily see "The Lake", which exclaims aplenty-- "You broke a promise!/ Just be honest!"-- but isn't nearly as euphoric, though it does start to surge, bittersweetly, right when Muscles announces, "So I dive right in." And if there's anything we can learn from Joe Lieberman, also known for his exuberant exclamations, it's that "the surge" is responsible for all things good, including ice cream. Also, perpetual war.
Ottawa's Jokers of the Scene have been getting some attention lately for their Mishka mixtape, along with remixes for the likes of South Rakkas Crew, Vitaminsforyou, Dandi Wind, and others. Their Muscles remix takes "The Lake" and basically adds more awesome. Guns Babes Lemonade's version already had a thumping bass drum and glowing synths, but this one adds some Justice-ish electro-house filters and turns the gang of multi-tracked Muscles shouting into an even bigger gang of multi-tracked Muscles shouting. And there's a snare-clattering loop that reminds me of the "jungle" preset on my old Hammerhead freeware (praise be to Ted Stevens' series of tubes). "Let's save the night," Muscles repeats. Capital idea-- er, I mean, awesome.
